Gill R&D Oil Level Sensor for Europe OEM

May 14, 2014

gill-rd-application-story-rail-level-sensor.jpgA European manufacturer of locomotive and rolling stock required a sensing device for installation in the sump of the diesel engine to monitor the oil level. The existing device supplied with the engine was not reliable enough for the application, therefore the customer contacted Gill R&D to produce a sensor which would withstand the demanding application.

The Challenge

Due to the tight space restriction of the engine, the customers required a miniature capacitive liquid level sensor which could be specified to a particular cable length. In addition, the daily extended service levels of railway rolling stock, demanded a very robust mechanical design to ensure that the sensor provided the reliability and durability required of rail equipment.

The Results

A miniature liquid level sensor was developed with a threaded flange incorporating a sealing O-ring for installation straight into the oil sump mounting port. Significant quantities of sensors were installed into the rolling stock as a like-for-like replacement to the existing OEM sensors.

Project results and benefits

  • Successful design and manufacture of miniature capacitive oil level sensors, proven through a rigorous testing and validation programme
  • Provided a quick, reliable measurement solution that would withstand demanding application
  • Offered sensor designs with the required flying lead length and connector type, reducing downtime and unavailability of the rolling stock
  • Provided full product training and aftercare support

Phases of working with the customer

  • Receipt of specification
  • Evaluation of feasibility of developing a suitably robust sensor within the restricted installation envelope
  • Submission of suggested design for approval with pricing guidance
  • Approval of design with purchase of samples for evaluation and testing
  • Confirmation of design and performance suitability
  • Formal quotation for supply of sensors to replace all the OEM sensors
  • Acceptance of quotation, delivery schedule set and manufacture commenced
  • To meet customer needs, delivery schedule brought forward for 50% of order quantity
  • Remaining order delivered on time
